There are several different types of jumps seen in horse shows and they are aimed at riders of all abilities. It is important to ensure that you and your horse are familiar with all the jumps that could appear in the show. Take the time to make sure your horse jumps comfortably and you will stand a much better chance of showing safely and gracefully.

There are many different types of show jump but the most common can be set up easily and will prepare you for the other less common jumps. Practice on as many different types as possible and try to get your horse comfortable with going over anything that stands in its way. The penalty for a horse refusing a jump is 4 faults and could impair your chances of winning.

Vertical jumps are the most simple, being a series of poles above one another for height. There is very little width although more vertical jumps may be placed close by the make the jump wonder. Three together is called a triple bar. The aim is to clear the top pole without knocking it.

The oxer jump is a combination of two vertical jumps. The poles on each jump can be even to create a square oxer, or differing to create ascending and descending oxers. Sometimes the poles will slant in different directions, known as a Swedish oxer.

The wall is a solid jump, designed to look like a brick wall. It can look quite intimidating but is actually made of lightweight materials that will move if the horse touches the top of the jump. The aim is to clear the top without touching the bricks.

The hogs back is one of the more advanced jumps. The width is 3 poles which are placed at varying heights. The middle is usually the highest pole with the other two varying from each other.

Cross country jumps can be very different in the look and feel and will usually be set up differently to show jumps. They are made from items such as logs to create a rustic feel that fits in with the countryside setting. They may have ditches dug around and underneath the jumps. Solid jumps and angled jumps are popular in cross country.

Water jumps can be seen at many events, created with ditches or troughs filled up with water. The horse is expected to clear the water. You may also land and run through the water, although this will slow you down.

Circuits are generally set up in such a way that will allow the horse to take only a few steps between jumps, sometimes as little as two or three. Your horse’s pace will be important on these circuits so be sure you are familiar with his gait. If possible, walk the horse around any new courses so that when your horse jumps it will be less of a surprise.

If you ride a gelding (or stallion) you may at times notice a loud noise coming from his sheath area, usually when you’re trotting him. If you join horse riding online discussions you’ll discover other riders ask about this.

So what exactly is a sheath?

The tube of outside skin that protects a stallion or gelding’s penis is called a sheath, and it depends how far the penis has been retracted as to how much air has become trapped inside of it.

So What Causes That Noise To Come Out Of The Sheath?

The simplest answer would be “tension,” and that comes in a variety of forms.

One cause of sheath noises is when the hind end is stiff. Back in the days of keeping horses tied in stalls this was one of the more common reasons for stiff hindquarters as these horses were basically immobile for hours at a time.

But now it comes from the horse feeling restricted – either physically or psychologically. The more anxious the gelding (or stallion) is, the more air gets trapped inside his sheath and this makes loud noises when he moves.

How Does One Prevent Or Stop This Noise?

The gelding has first to relax before the noise will go away.

He may be feeling nervous because you are at a show: he senses your tension in addition to any extra anxiety he may be feeling because of the new environment and strange horses.

Even your style of riding may lead to tension and anxiety. This is the most likely cause for those who are just beginning as horseback riders. Step back and look at your performance – are you using your aids too strongly or are you asking your mount to perform tasks he isn’t comfortable with yet?

One of the best ways to get him to relax is send him forward freely, on light contact, and asking for energy from the hind end. Then ride some serpentines, circles, and large loops, including frequent transitioning between the walk, trot, or canter. Another exercise would be to post to the trot and then sit out of the saddle during the canter to allow him to relax his back and be able to carry you without his spine being stiff.

If you’re know you have advanced enough in your riding to be able to ask for shortening and then lengthening within the gaits, do so while you create engagement of his hind quarters with your leg aids pushing (but not hurrying) him into that steady rein contact.

Once your horse has relaxed and is feeling more comfortable, the noises should disappear. You’ll be able to tell the other members of your favorite website or horse riding online discussion group how you were able to solve your horse’s problems!

Using of Jim Milton’s how to ride a horse website, you will feel comfortable around horses and you will learn horse riding online in no time.

A horse supplement company’s objective ought to be to make a cost-effective, basic, smart formula for the full wellness and diet of the whole horse. Clients should be expecting peak functionality and maximum pleasure from their equines as well as fulfillment, secure feeling from the products they are using and the service delivered will be unparalleled, uncompromising professionalism, truthful and have integrity they are doing the most they can for the owner and their horses.

Diet program, exercise, breeding and care are the components that support the horse athlete. The highest possible levels of performance in working or show horses can only be realized when essential feed and supplement needs are attained for the horse. A horse supplement should produce a full and balanced package of nutritional vitamins, nutrients, probiotics and digestive aids in a single container that is certainly needed by horses in all kinds and phases of performance.

There are a great number of vitamin supplements that can be purchased nowadays. Yet, few are formulated, reasonable and buffered in order to meet the preferences of all categories of horses, and quite a few are pricey and really difficult to implement everyday and the horse owner just determines the equine doesn’t have to have this product when in fact they do as the majority of the feed stuff is highly processed, aged, spoiled and missing the majority of its vitamins and minerals.

A nutritional supplements objectives must be to work at the cellular level bathing the cells in best possible nutrition, and the cells will reply with resilience, wellness, and long life and the formula ought to have withstood the test of time and produced champions.

This solution yields stronger health and consequently the whole equine exhibits strength, stamina, and a practically unbelievable prevention to parasites and disorder. Whenever the cellular material are healthy, the entire equine is healthy.

So, you have decided that you want to take horseback riding lessons, but you have no idea how to get started. Luckily, there are endless resources available and you should have no problem getting started.

So, you have decided that you want to take horseback riding lessons, but you have no idea how to get started. Luckily, there are endless resources available and you should have no problem getting started.

The first thing that you should do is to find a horse back riding instructor. There are many resources that you can access to find the perfect instructor for you needs. You can start by looking in your local phone directory, going to a horse show, or by word of mouth (do you have a friend or know someone taking lessons). You can also contact national, regional, or local horse clubs, the United States Equestrian Federation, or breed associations (AQHA, APHA, Appaloosa horse breeders…). You could also stop by a local stable and ask if they have an instructor that gives lessons, and even if they do not give lessons, they will probably know of someone who does.

When you are looking for an instructor, do not be afraid to ask question. After all, you want to get the best possible instruction for your money. The first thing you should ask is if the instructor has any certifications or accreditations. You should also ask how long they have owned and ridden horses, how long have they been teaching, what is their specialty (you want to make sure that they teach the discipline that you want to learn), how many students do they currently have, and do they offer private lessons? Once you have found an instructor, it is also important to evaluate the stables that they teach at.

When you are visiting the stables it is important to make sure that the stables are clean, the horses look healthy, and that the stables main priority is safety for everyone. Here are some specific things that you can look for when you are visiting a stable. Is the riding area free from clutter, are the students wearing riding helmets and horse back riding boots, are the lesson groups to big, do the students appear to be on the same level, are the horses healthy, and finally does everyone appear to be happy and having fun learning?

You have found a good horse riding stables and a good instructor, now it is time to find all the proper equipment. Many times your instructor will have all of the equipment you will need for your lesson and you will not need to purchase any of your own equipment at first. After you have progressed in your lessons, you may want to have your own equipment. There are many ways to find good quality equipment with out spending a fortune. Your best bet is to ask your instructor or other students at the stable if they, or someone they know, have any equipment for sale, or you can check your local paper or tack shop. When shopping for equipment you want to make sure that nothing is torn or cracked and you want to make sure that all of the leather equipment (saddles and bridles) have been properly oiled and conditioned to prevent the leather from cracking.

You should now have the basic knowledge to find everything that you need to become a great horse back rider in no time.

Want to learn horseback riding from your home? Jim Milton has a great online course that will help you achieve that in no time and without paying for expensive classes. Visit Milton’s horse riding lessons and start learning today.

Today, it is becoming more and more popular to personalize your bank checks with images that are unique and distinctive. There are many themes that are available to choose from, but horse checks are by far one of the most common.

A lot of little girls go through the stage of wanting a horse when they are young. Some never outgrow that love and continue with their love of horses into adulthood. Likewise, many men find themselves having bonds with their horses that sometimes surpass their bonds with their human counterparts. So what makes horses special and why do we love them so much?

The idea of the horse doesn’t always have the same meaning from one person to the next. Luckily, there is an array of themes when it comes to checks, which means there is something for everyone. One thing that horses can signify is beauty. Images of carousel ponies might be attractive in this instance.

Horses can also represent a sporting event, such as polo or horseracing. You can also order horse personal checks that contain these images as well. Horseracing is a very intense sport in that it is fast and quick. Horses can race neck and neck and then win by a nose.

The old west, where cowboys were rugged and the horses were wild, is also symbolized by equine images. If you order horse checks with these images, expect them to be filled with desert images and beautiful landscapes. Going out west used to represent an adventure and having a horse back then was a vital part of surviving.

Horses can be a symbol of power, strength, and beauty. The fact that horses are so large and powerful, and yet can be tamed and ridden by even the smallest person, is exhilarating. Many horse-themed checks have images of exuberant horses running through crashing waves or riding carefree across the plains.

In addition to having a personal love of horses, they have been featured in many popular forms of media. John Wayne was almost never without his horse. Mr. Ed is still one of television’s most popular characters. “My Little Pony”, nearly thirty years later, can still be found on children’s lunch boxes and bedroom sets.

If you’re a horse lover, chances are that you have claimed horses are part of your individuality at some point. Images of horses can be found in the form of pictures airbrushed across vehicles, framed pictures, and porcelain statues. Including horses on your banks checks is another way of showcasing your interest in the equine world.

Ordering your checks online will usually save you 50% on the price of the checks. If you look at online check web sites you can find a substantial savings. You are also able to order duplicate checks and checkbook covers at most sites. The turnaround time is a couple of days; about the same amount of time you would wait if you ordered them at your bank.

Before you purchase horse checks, visit Horse-Checks.com to get coupons and to save 50% off your next purchase of horse personal checks.

Working in the horse business, I often get asked how much a good horse costs. Unfortunately, the question is almost always in terms of ‘how much to buy’ rather than ‘how much to keep’. The sad truth is that far too many people are buying horses and then finding that they cannot afford to keep them.

In part, this is due to the fact that people involved in the horse business (breeding, selling, training) do not want to scare potential buyers off by telling them just how expensive horse ownership is. After all, if someone is unsure if they can spend a few thousand dollars to buy a horse, the seller will likely lose the deal if they explain that it may cost $30 000 to $60 000 over the next 10 years. Although there may be honest horse people that do go out of their way to explain this information, in our experience they are in the small minority.

If you know someone looking to buy a horse, you can do them a big favour by letting them know the financial implications in advance. Of course, it is hard to quote a specific number as costs vary from under $50/month to over $1000/month depending on circumstances. However, here are some tips on how to do a rough calculation.

To start, ask if the horse will be professionally stabled or if one is stabling the horse oneself. In the former case, costs (including box, bedding, food, labour) can vary from $150/month to $1000/month although $300-$500/month is typical. It depends mainly on where you live (urban areas are more expensive) so you will need to phone around to check the local costs.

If one is stabling the horse oneself, the main costs are bedding, food and labour. Bedding costs will depend very much on the type of bedding and where one lives. If you are using straw, you will need about one small bale per day (12kg or 25lb) so check local prices. For food, figure that you need about 3%-4% of the horse’s weight each day. So a 500kg horse needs 15kg-20kg food each day. If you are feeding hay, phone around for local hay prices. In most areas this quantity of hay would be about $3/day, but in some places the price is as high as $20/day, so you really need to check local prices.

There are also a lot of incidental costs such as wormers, salt, minerals, annual innoculations, and annual dental check. Allow about $500/year to cover all of these. The other big consideration is medical expenses. In a good year your horse may be perfectly healthy and not need to see a vet, in which case there are no exceptional medical expenses. However, one bad case of colic can set you back thousands of dollars. So, you either need to be prepared to foot a major medical bill in the case of serious illness or injury, or take out medical insurance which starts at about $40/month.

Another consideration is how you use the horse. Riding the horse means that you will need to buy a saddle, tack and riding clothes. Showing or competing with the horse involves additional expenses.

None of this is intended to discourage one from buying a horse. Instead, it is to help one understand the financial commitment involved with owning and keeping a horse, so that one can prepare for it.

Doug Stewart is the author of various articles on Horse Health, including the above.

Many people buy a horse which is too young for their requirements, and consequently pay more than they should, as well as getting a horse which lacks the required maturity and training. Less often, the opposite mistake is made, of buying a horse which is too old to provide the desired years of future riding. This article considers these issues in terms of the advantages and disadvantages of various horse ages.

4-Year Old Horse. This is a popular age, as horses usually start training at age 3, to be ready for basic riding by age 4. Consequently, you can start riding and enjoying it immediately. It is also young enough that you can do advanced training if you wish. The disadvantage is that it will tend to be somewhat more expensive to buy than a younger untrained horse.

5 to 7 Years Old. A trained horse of this age has all the advantages of a 4-year old. However, it will be more emotionally mature and calmer, and may be trained to a higher level as well. All of these factors make it easier to manage and more reliable than a younger horse, so it is more suitable for new riders and for children. However, as a horse gets older it becomes more difficult and consequently more expensive to train so one should ensure that the horse is fully trained before the end of this period.

Older than 7 years. Horses get progressively calmer and quieter as they age, so horses older than 7 years are often the best choice for children, new riders and nervous riders. If the horse has been well treated, is not too old and is in good health, it can still provide many years of riding. Well kept horses, used only for light riding, can often be ridden into their 20s and sometimes even older. In addition, the older horse is often less expensive to buy.

3-Year Old. A three year old horse (depending on breed) is ready to start its training and you can enjoy this experience. However, it is usually less expensive to buy a trained 4 year old that is ready to ride than to buy a 3 year old and pay for a year’s stabling and training.

Less than 3 years old. Watching a horse grow up can give immeasurable pleasure, something like watching young children mature. However, like young children, it can be difficult to predict how they will turn out physically and otherwise, so a foal is more of a gamble than a mature horse. Although foals are less expensive to buy than mature horses of the same quality, once one adds in the cost of stabling and training before it is ready to ride, they are usually more expensive in the end.

The preceding is a general summary and not applicable in all circumstances. For example, if you will be using the horse for racing or other competitions, the associated age restrictions need to be taken into account. Furthermore, breeds and individual horses age at different rates, as well as owners having different policies as to when and to what extent horses are trained prior to sale.

If you are looking for a free (or very inexpensive) horse, one of the best places to look is rescue associations, or animal rescue groups which also deal with horses.

If you are looking for a free (or very inexpensive) horse, one of the best places to look is rescue associations, or animal rescue groups which also deal with horses. These associations take on horses but have limited resources to take care of them in terms of space (stalls, pasture), money (food, bedding, etc.) and staff time (mucking out, general care). Consequently, they are normally looking for good homes to pass the horses onto, so that they can free up their scare resources to care for others. Therefore, they will usually pass the horses on for free, or for a nominal amount (to recover some of their direct costs).

Aside from getting a free horse, you are also doing a good deed. In fact two good deeds: giving a horse a good home and making room for another horse to be rescued.

Of course, any rescue organization will want to be sure that the horse is going to a good home, before they consider giving it away. Expect to be interviewed to determine your fitness to take on a horse. Typical questions are whether you have the commitment, time, money and facilities (e.g. box and pasture) to take on a horse long-term. They will also want to know if you have the knowledge and experience to take care of a horse, or as a minimum that someone will work with you to teach you the required basics.

Before taking a horse from a rescue organization, you should learn as much about the horse and its history as you can. This will help you understand its capabilities (e.g. how much training it has), physical health, any behavioral issues, and any health concerns. In this regard, one should ask about the results of any veterinary examinations and the experiences of the staff when dealing with the horse while it was in their care.

It is also useful to know why the horse was rescued and what condition it was in when rescued. If the reason was economic (e.g. owner in financial difficulty) or practical (owner moving house and will no longer have facilities) then there are no implications. However, in the case of horses which were neglected or abused, there may be long term health or behavioral issues. Knowing the horses background can identify potential issues which may otherwise not be apparent.

Once you have a good understand of the horse’s condition and any possible associated issues, you can decide if the horse meets your requirements. For example, if you want the horse just as a companion, it does not matter if it is old or can no longer be ridden. However, if you want it as a riding horse, you will want one which is physically sound and well trained. It may well be that the association does not have a horse at the moment which meets your needs. In this case, the best course is to assure them that you will provide a good home to the right horse and provide the association with a written description of your requirements and your contact details. Unless your needs are very unusual, it is quite possible that in a few weeks or months the horse you are looking for will show up.
