Public Holidays In Different States In Australia

by Bartholomew Pettigrew on May 24, 2010

Public holidays, in Australia differ every year, in both the amount and when they are. Many holidays are made public, non-working holidays, such as Proclamation day, Christmas Day and New Years Day, however, many big companies will continue to operate during these times and staff will receive bonuses for working.

One of the main holidays is ‘Australia Day’, which commemorates the first English settlement, at Port Jackson, in 1788. Celebrated from 1808, this holiday still carries on until today, and since nineteen sixty the ‘Australian Of The Year’ is also celebrated on this day.

Another celebrated holiday is Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, and in some territories Easter Tuesday.

Many Australian Nationals have lost their lives, in the numerous wars the country has participated in, and to celebrate their loss, ‘Anzac Day’ is held on the 25th of April every year.

The Queens birthday is celebrated every second Monday, in June every year, except in Western Australia as ‘Foundation Day’ is celebrated instead. There is still continued criticism, throughout Australia, regarding the recognition of England’s monarchy.

There are also specific, state holidays, including ‘Melbourne Day’, which is held every first Tuesday, of every November. Melbourne also celebrates ‘Family and Community Day’ on the 24th of September.

‘Canberra Day’, which celebrates the official act of creating Canberra back in 1913, is held every 2nd Monday in March.

The state of Queensland celebrates ‘Queensland Day’ every June 6th , however, although commemorated, it is not often a public holiday.

The opening of Darwin’s Railway, is also celebrated each 1st Monday of August, and allows individuals to gather at Adelaide’s River for a picnic.

Taking place at the Morphetville racecourse, the ‘Adelaide Cup Day’ has been held since 2006.

Another celebration of the Australian love for horse racing, is held every 4th Wednesday of October, in Geelong, in Victoria.

These are just a few of the public holidays in Australia, and many other holidays are held resulting in long weekends for lucky Australian nationals.
